Register Now: DT+ Teacher Talk, “Dealing with Perfectionism and Performance Anxiety”
We’ve all seen it: The students who are so hyper-focused on being “perfect” that they can’t freely experience the joy of movement. But when it comes to working in a high-pressure industry, we dance teachers are just as susceptible to falling into the trap of punishing perfectionism as the students we teach.
Whether it’s helping your students cope with performance anxiety, unpacking your own personal self-criticism, or simply managing the day-to-day stresses that come with teaching, you’ll find plenty of professional advice in our next DT+ Teacher Talk, “Dealing With Perfectionism and Performance Anxiety,” on Thursday, May 8, at 12 pm EDT.
Dance Teacher’s editorial director, Reanne Rodrigues, joins writer and mental health advocate Kathleen McGuire Gaines and Dr. Elizabeth Hutter, the school principal of New Ballet in San Jose, California, and president of the American Psychological Association’s section on performance psychology, in this live hour-long Zoom discussion. Attendees will also be able to ask questions in real time.
About the Speakers
Elizabeth K. Hutter, PsyD

Dr. Hutter is the president of the American Psychological Association’s Section II: Performance Psychology within the Society for Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology. She currently serves as the Informational Papers Chair for Dance/USA’s Task Force on Dancer Health and as the Wellness Director and School Principal at New Ballet, San Jose, California.
Dr. Hutter has nearly 20 years of experience working with pre-professional and professional performing artists, companies, and directors around the globe. This follows 10 years of clinical-psychology work after earning her doctorate at Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Chicago, her doctoral internship at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Mental Health Center, and her postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
She is motivated to advocate for mental health professionals and the performing arts communities they treat, and to further progress artists’ success and satisfaction through performance psychology.
Kathleen McGuire Gaines

Gaines founded Minding the Gap in 2019 to address the lack of mental health support and services in the dance community.
As a dancer, Gaines trained at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, the San Francisco Ballet School, the School of American Ballet, and the Chautauqua Festival program. She holds a BA in writing from the University of Pittsburgh and is a certified Mental Health First Aid trainer. Over the last 14 years, Gaines has written more than 150 articles on dance for Dance Media publications. In 2014, she was named a contributing writer to Dance Magazine.
Minding the Gap was founded as a reaction to the outpouring of support Kathleen received after her article “Why Are We Still So Bad at Addressing Dancers’ Mental Health?” was posted on the Dance Magazine website in the summer of 2017. She is determined to see mental health being regarded with the same seriousness as physical health in dance culture.
